D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services evacuated Thurston Hall residents early Tuesday morning after a fire broke out in the laundry room on the fourth floor.
FEMS Public Information Officer Vito Maggiolo said FEMS dispatched 12 units and 50 personnel to the residence hall on 1900 F Street at 12:03 a.m. in response to a report of a dryer fire in the fourth floor laundry room. Maggiolo said FEMS transported one person to a hospital for injuries that did not appear to be of a “serious nature.”
University officials issued a GW Alert for urgent fire department activity at 12:41 a.m., and asked “impacted individuals” to relocate to the University Student Center. Officials issued a second alert for urgent fire activity at 1:39 a.m. and again requested community members avoid the area.
An Office of Student Life staff member said at around 1:15 a.m. that he suspected it would take FEMS about an hour to inspect the residence hall. More than 200 Thurston residents waited in the first floor of the student center for officials to issue an all-clear.
At 2:20 a.m. Vice Provost for Student Affairs Colette Coleman entered the residence hall. More than 100 students waited in front of the building and on the sidewalk across the street.
Officials lifted the GW Alert at 2:23 a.m. Coleman held one of Thurston’s doors open for students as they re-entered the residence hall.
