Associate Head Coach and alumna Stephanie Stoicovy Worrell will head the gymnastics team, Athletics Director Tanya Vogel announced Tuesday.
Worrell will step into the role as head coach during her ninth season with the Revolutionaries, after starting her coaching career at GW in 2015 as an assistant coach and later serving the team as Associate Head Coach in 2022. Worrell will take the reins from former Head Coach Margie Foster Cunningham, the longest-tenured coach at GW after leading the program for 39 years.
“Her vision to incorporate so much of GW Gymnastics’ history while leading this generation to put their stamp on this storied program uniquely qualifies Steph to be GW’s head coach,” Vogel, who is departing her role this summer, said in the release.
After graduating from GW with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science in 2013, Worrell earned her master’s from GW’s Graduate School of Education and Human Development in 2019.
“I am elated for Steph and thrilled for our GW gymnastic community as well,” Cunningham said in the release. “There is nobody better suited to lead this program than her. From her time as a student-athlete through her rise to Associate Head Coach, she showed preternatural poise, leadership and consistency, approaching everything she did with an impeccable eye for detail.”
A standout performer with a distinguished career, Worrell was a four-year letterman winner at GW and back-to-back NCAA Qualifier in 2012 and 2013. During her junior and senior years, Worrell earned East-Atlantic Gymnastics League First Team Honors all around. After her graduation, officials renamed the “most accomplished award” in honor of Worrell for her dedication and performance.
Worrell’s coaching contributed to the success of Jillian Winstanley (‘18) and Alex Zois (‘19), who competed in the vault and uneven bars at the EAGL Championships in 2016. In addition, Worrell helped guide sophomore Cami Drouin-Allaire (‘18) to the title of EAGL Gymnast of the year. That same year, GW achieved its highest score (195.55) at the Athens NCAA regional.
In the 2020 season, which officials cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, GW placed 36th overall with a postseason score of (195.900), marking the Rev’s fourth time over the score. Despite only competing four times, Worrell helped the Revs secure fourth in the EAGL Championship.
“I believe this championship program is greater than the sum of its parts and together, this team and future teams will accomplish greatness through discipline, commitment and respect,” Worrell said in the release. “I’m excited to bring my passion for student-athlete development, competitive heart and innovative ideas to lead the women of GW Gymnastics.”
