D.C.’s minimum hourly wage increased July 1 by 50 cents for non-tipped employees and by $2 for tipped employees.
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser announced in a June 28 release that the District’s minimum wage would increase from $17.50 per hour from $17.00 for non-tipped employees, and from $8.00 per hour to $10.00 for tipped employees. This year is the 10th consecutive year the minimum wage increased, in accordance with the Fair Shot Minimum Wage Amendment of 2016 and Bowser’s “Fight for $15” which states that wages will increase annually to fairly compensate employees.
All GW student employees are paid at least the minimum wage, according to the GW Career Services website.
“District employers play a crucial role in our local economy,” Unique Morris-Hughes, the director of the Department of Employment Services, said in the release “We aim to ensure that all businesses are informed about the District’s full minimum wage increase to maintain compliance and guarantee that workers receive their rightful earnings.”
The Fair Shot Minimum Wage Amendment of 2016 states that the minimum wage will increase annually in accordance with the Consumer Price Index, a measure of the change in prices of consumer goods and services.
District voters passed Initiative 82 in November 2022 which eliminates the minimum wage for tipped employees. The tipped minimum wage difference is met by employers through gratuities to reach $17.50. Officials will phase out the tipped minimum wage by 2027 and replace it with a universal minimum wage, according to the District of Columbia Tip Credit Elimination Act of 2022.
