After students set up an encampment to protest the University’s ties to Israel, officials said protesters must leave by 7 p.m. But, members of the group said they would refuse to move until officials adhere to their list of demands.
Here’s what to know before the 7 p.m. deadline:
The protestor’s demands
Roughly 50 students from the DMV Coalition of Students for Justice in Palestine pitched tents in the University Yard at 5 a.m. Thursday to call for GW divestment in Israel, the disclosure of endowment fund and investment sources, and the cancellation of alleged disciplinary proceedings against pro-Palestinian students.
A GW Alumni for Justice in Palestine Instagram post states that protesters are also calling for the protection of pro-Palestinian speech on campus and the termination of academic relations with Israel. One protestor recites the coalition’s demands every 15 to 30 minutes.
Officials have not said whether they will comply with the demands.
“As our people discover mass graves of our martyrs in Gaza, it is our moral imperative to disrupt business as usual for an end to institutional cooperation in genocide,” a GW Students for Justice in Palestine Instagram post states.
GWPD, MPD involvement
The GW Police Department will require protesters to remove their tents and clear U-Yard at 7 p.m. with the assistance of the Metropolitan Police Department, due to the presence of non-GW individuals on campus.
MPD officers congregated on Constitution Avenue at approximately 1:26 p.m. and began to encroach on the Foggy Bottom campus at 5:01 p.m. Officers gathered at Pennsylvania Avenue and 22nd Street also began to approach U-Yard at that time.
Waning counterprotester presence
Counterprotesters have approached the encampment throughout day, reaching up to five counterprotesters around 1:30 p.m. who waved Israeli and American flags outside of Lisner Hall. GWPD officers removed a counterprotester who was waving a small Israeli flag and pushing a GWPD officer who was trying to disperse protesters at about 9:59 a.m.
Counterprotesters presence has been minimal since roughly 4:26 p.m.
