Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority officials began installing new fare gates aimed at deterring fare evasion at the Foggy Bottom-GWU Metro station on Thursday.
Officials recently installed higher and stronger fare gates at the Foggy Bottom Station as part of a systemwide effort to minimize people jumping over and gliding past fare gates without paying. The gates are 55 inches taller than the old fare gates and twice as strong.
WMATA officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment on when officials installed the fare gates.
Officials began installing the new fare gate model in the District in July. Officials also began enforcing $50 fines for fare evaders at Metro stations and arresting those who refused to pay initial fines last month.
