Junior Antonella Galindo died in a car accident on Friday while studying abroad at the University of Melbourne, officials said in a statement sent to GW community members Sunday.
Galindo studied international affairs with a concentration in security policy and a minor in psychological and brain sciences, according to her LinkedIn account.
“The loss of Antonella will be felt by many throughout our GW community,” University President Ellen Granberg and Dean of Students Colette Coleman said in the statement.
Galindo was a member of the Sigma Kappa sorority and GW FUEGO, a Latin dance team. She was also involved with Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity and wished to pursue a career in law after college, with interests in the intersection between international law and global challenges like environmental issues and immigration, according to her LinkedIn.
Before coming to GW, Galindo served as an intern with FERRERE Abogados — a South American law firm — in Ecuador’s capitol, Quito, and as a research and events intern for the Ecuadorian embassy in 2022. The Arbitration and Mediation Center of the Quito Chamber of Commerce, the Attorney General’s Office of Ecuador and Universidad de Las Américas — a university in Quito – and its law school have issued statements sending their condolences to Galindo’s family.
A spokesperson for the Melbourne North police station said the details surrounding Galindo’s death are only shared with family members and unavailable to the public. A Melbourne University representative said they are sharing information and working closely with GW.
