Fifth-year senior guard James Bishop IV rang in the new year as one of five Oscar Robertson National Players of the Week named by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association.
Bishop was instrumental in the Revolutionaries’ first conference victory last Saturday over VCU, when he recorded 28 points, including a game-winning shot with 1.7 seconds left to seal the win for GW. His buzzer-beating fadeaway counted for two of his 23 points in the second half of play.
Bishop also scored a season-high 32 points in 51 minutes during a Jan. 3 loss against Fordham. He shot an efficient 11 of 21 from the field and went four for seven from behind the arc in the team’s triple overtime effort against the Rams.
Bishop stands alongside North Carolina’s Armando Bacot, Illinois’ Marcus Domask, San Francisco’s Jonathan Mogbo and Utah State’s Great Osobor as an honoree for the week ending Jan. 7.
Bishop concluded the week with an average stat line of 30 points, five rebounds, and 4.5 assists, as well as shooting 52.9 percent from the field, 54.5 from beyond the arc, and 81.8 from the free throw line. Bishop’s 18.5 points per game this season is second in the conference behind Duquesne’s Dae Dae Grant.
Bishop becomes the second member of an A-10 team to take home this award this year, joining St. Bonaventure’s Mika Adams-Woods, who took home the award in December. Bishop is the first GW player to win the award.
Bishop also won A-10 Player of the Week honors for his efforts, his second such award this season.
Alongside Bishop, freshman standout Darren Buchanan Jr. received the title of A-10 Rookie of the Week for his performances against Fordham and VCU. Buchanan sank 38 points in GW’s triple OT battle against the Rams, the most by any freshman in the NCAA this season.
After one week of conference play, the Revolutionaries sit at 1-1 in the A-10 and 12-3 overall. GW continues their league play Saturday against Davidson (0-1 A-10, 10-4) at the Charles E. Smith Center at 2 p.m. on the Monumental Sports Network.
