The D.C. Council unanimously approved acting Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela Smith to a permanent role Tuesday.
Mayor Muriel Bowser nominated Smith, the former U.S. Park Police Chief, in July, replacing former chief Robert J. Contee III, who resigned in April to work for the FBI. Smith is now officially the District’s second female police chief and the first permanent Black female police chief.
“Our community understands the urgency to both drive down crime and build up MPD,” Bowser said in a Twitter statement. “Chief Smith hit the ground running in July, sharing her story and vision, making sure she was accessible to residents and businesses, and prioritizing common-sense solutions to long-standing challenges.”
Smith joined MPD in 2022 as the first chief equity officer, where she led department efforts on diversity, equity and inclusion and became the assistant chief for the Homeland Security Bureau in April, according to an MPD press release.
