The District’s electricity provider returned power to the Mount Vernon Campus Sunday evening after a Saturday thunderstorm left residents of the campus in the dark.
Officials offered Vern residents a room on the Foggy Bottom Campus on Sunday before the power returned at about 5:30 p.m. Campus Living officials said in an email to residents that the dining hall at Pelham Commons will remain closed until further notice.
Vern residents who requested a room in Foggy Bottom will have access to it until Monday at 11:59 p.m., per the email.
Power had returned to Hensley Hall earlier Sunday morning but only backup generators provided minimal light in West, Cole and Somers halls.
As of Sunday at 10:30 p.m., Pepco, the District’s power provider, reported that roughly 4,000 D.C. residents were still without power.
The strong winds, which reached 84 mph on the Vern, knocked down several trees on the satellite campus, but the stricken trees do not appear to have hit buildings or caused other damage. One large tree fell outside the Acheson Science Center. Backup generators lit up hallways in campus buildings.
Major roads and tourist attractions like the Smithsonian National Zoo remained closed Sunday, according to the Washington Post.
