Campus sustained 44 thefts from the last day of spring classes to the first day of the fall semester this year, down about 6 percent from 47 thefts last summer.

An attempted armed carjacking occurred on campus early Friday morning.

A Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson said two male suspects armed with a handgun attempted to open the door of a car with two passengers in it on the 2400 block of H Street NW at 2:40 a.m. She said the passengers refused to open the door, and the suspects fled the scene.

The spokesperson said MPD estimates the suspects to be between 17 and 25 years of age. She said officers responded to the scene but did not specify how many units were dispatched.

University officials issued a GW Alert at 3:10 a.m. for an attempted carjacking at 23rd and H Street NW and urged community members to avoid the area. University officials issued an all clear alert at 3:50 a.m.

The armed carjacking attempt comes after multiple armed teenagers stole a car on the 2300 block of 23rd Street last month. MPD officers recovered the vehicle and arrested two suspects later that day.
