Metro officials will extend Metrorail’s operating hours starting Sunday in an attempt to bring riders back as the city emerges from pandemic restrictions.

Metro is extending train service from 11 p.m. to midnight for all trains beginning July 18, according to a Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority release. The move comes as Metro officials attempt to lure back more riders, expanding Metrobus service and lowering fares.

Metro General Manager Paul Wiedefeld said in the release that the change will allow residents who stay out late for work or entertainment more flexibility to travel home.

“As the region recovers, Metro will be there to meet the transit needs of customers and businesses in the National Capital Region,” Wiedefeld said in the release.

Additional improvements to rail and bus services will be implemented in September, the release states.
