GW received $100,000 from the Atlantic 10 conference to offset COVID-19 related expenses, according to a press release last week.
The funding is allocated for COVID-19 testing, updated travel procedures and “unbudgeted expenses” related to health and safety protocols, the release states. Each of the 14 member schools received $100,000, totaling $1.4 million in extra relief.
“To mitigate risk and successfully attempt to compete in the COVID-19 environment, A-10 institutions have committed significant resources to implement safety and health protocols which have real associated cost,” A-10 Commissioner Bernadette McGlade said in the release. “Additionally, the attention to student-athlete welfare, mental stress support and managing social anxiety requires financial commitments.”
Athletic department spokesperson Brian Sereno said the athletic department’s health and safety protocols include supplying personal protective equipment, sanitization supplies and signage.
He added that GW redesigned facilities to allow athletes to continue strength training in accordance with social distancing measures and utilized off-campus COVID-19 testing when campus labs were not available.
Sereno declined to say how much health and safety-related protocols cost, but he added that the “majority” of costs will be covered by the A-10’s distribution.
“We are extremely fortunate that we have access to the same testing that all of our on-campus community does to help mitigate risk and increased expenses to athletics, and we are also very grateful for the conference distribution which will cover the majority of our COVID-related expenses,” he said in an email.
