Lacrosse head coach Jennifer Ulehla is currently rebuilding her coaching staff after both of her assistant coaches departed, athletic department spokeswoman Lauren Shear said last week.
Haley Hicklen, the former defensive coordinator and goalie coach for the Colonials, left the team in July to serve as an assistant coach at Pittsburgh. Monica Yeakel, the former assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, departed in February after seven months in the position, according to her LinkedIn profile.
Hicklen said in a release she was thankful for the mentorship and support from John Square, the associate athletics director for internal operations and lacrosse’s sport supervisor.
Both assistant coaches signed onto the season in August of last year prior to Ulehla’s first year with the program. Ulehla set out to revamp a struggling program, adjusting the team’s offense, defense and mentality. But the COVID-19 pandemic cut her inaugural season short, and the team finished its seven-game season without a win.
For the 2021 season, 23 members of last season’s team will return to the field. Five freshmen and one transfer will join the squad. Eight seniors graduated at the conclusion of the 2020 academic year and will not use the extra year of eligibility provided by the NCAA amid the pandemic at GW.
Shear declined to say when Ulehla will finalize her staff.
