The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority is now projecting to open the Silver Line extension next April – more than two years past the authority’s December 2018 completion goal, Reston Now reported Tuesday.
Construction on the 11-mile extension – which will add six stops to the line, including service to Dulles International Airport – fell two months off schedule last summer after contractors identified issues like cracks in concrete pedestals and defective rail ties. WMATA said last August that the extension would open July 2020.
The Metro extension is the first a private company, rather than WMATA, is building. WMATA’s Board of Directors will vote on the authority’s $2.1 billion operating budget Thursday, according to the WMATA website.

The Hatchet incorrectly reported that WMATA is voting on a $2.1 million budget. WMATA’s budget is slated for $2.1 billion. We regret this error.
