A former correspondent for The Daily Show who just landed his first Netflix special will headline Program Board’s first Welcome Week comedy show Sept. 1.
Hasan Minhaj will perform at the first-of-its-kind event in the Smith Center at 9 p.m., Program Board announced on its Facebook page Monday. Comedian Thomas Dale will open the event.
Tickets for the comedy show are $5 for general admission and $10 for floor seats.
Minhaj performed as a correspondent on The Daily Show from 2014 to 2018 and now will embark on his Netflix TV show, “Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj,” airing in October. He also performed as the featured speaker at the 2017 White House Correspondents Dinner.
Dale has roles on HBO’s “Funny as Hell” and Comedy Central’s “Adam Devine’s House Party.”
Program Board announced it would replace its annual Fall Fest concert with a comedy show Sunday.
Reed Elman Waxham, chair of Program Board, said the decision was based on student feedback stating they would prefer that the organization hosts fewer, higher-quality events each year.
“We could do a couple of smaller events throughout the year or we could have bigger, better events,” Elman Waxham said.
The Student Association and Class Council will throw a festival that will precede the comedy show in University Yard. That event will commence Sept. 1 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
The outdoor festival will provide live music from student organizations and local musicians, along with food trucks and lawn games.
