The Virginia Science and Technology Campus was under a tornado warning Thursday afternoon, according to a GW Alert.
The all-caps message urged those on the campus to “take cover now,” to move to the basement or lower levels of “sturdy” buildings, avoid windows and, if in a vehicle, “move to the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from flying debris.” The initial text alert did not specify that it only applied to those on the VSTC.
A tornado watch for the region has since been lifted, according to the Virginian Pilot.
The Virginia Science and Technology Campus, located in Ashburn Va., is about one hour away from GW’s main Foggy Bottom campus.
Heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds are predicted in the D.C. area Thursday, according to NBC Washington weather report.
Earlier Thursday morning a “micro tornado” ripped off part of the roof from Gonzaga High School in Northwest D.C., about 25 minutes from the Foggy Bottom campus.
