Police found no gun on a man reported to have a weapon on campus, according to a statement from GW’s top security official on Friday afternoon.

Senior Associate Vice President for Safety and Security Darrell Darnell said in an email that officers in the University Police Department and multiple other law enforcement agencies “canvassed the area and located the suspect” after a caller reported the man to have a gun near Guthridge Hall.

GW sent out an alert that the man was in custody at 12:51 p.m.

“After searching the area, the suspect’s car and interviewing the subject, we determined that there was no weapon,” Darnell said.

He added that the University continues to encourage community members to report suspicious activities to the police.

“We thank the community member who saw something and said something,” he said.

The suspect was a black man wearing a teal raincoat and a black cap while riding a bike, was spotted near Guthridge Hall at 12:30 p.m., according to an alert.

MPD officer Hugh Carrew confirmed that there was a report of a man with a gun, but said nothing had been found by 12:40 p.m.
