Amtrak will begin work on an expanded concourse in Union Station this summer, the Washington Post reported.
The renovations, which will cost an estimated $50 million, will push back a wall in the current concourse, doubling the size of the passenger waiting area, which includes restaurants and shops.
Construction is not anticipated to affect train travel.
The Post reported that this project will respond to long-standing complaints from the station’s nearly 37 million annual customers, who have said that the concourse in its current form is difficult to navigate.
The revamped area will include new restrooms, seats, gates, lounges and a glass wall for passengers to see the tracks from the concourse.
While this development is set to finish by 2020, improvements to Union Station are part of an ongoing master plan to make the station a “commercial epicenter” in the District, according to the Post.
