The Washington Monument is closed until early next week, The Washington Posted reported Friday.
The closure comes after an elevator control box was damaged by a contractor in the monument working on an unrelated issue, an official said late Friday.
National Park Service spokesman Mike Litterst said the damage was caused inadvertently and that the damage was “not the result of any mechanical failure in the elevator, or any other system.”
Two years ago, dozens of visitors were temporarily stuck inside the Washington Monument when the elevator’s door broke down, just about two after the monument reopened to the public.
The tourist attraction – and backdrop to GW’s Commencement ceremony – was closed for nearly three years after a 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck the District.
The Lincoln Memorial, located on the opposite side of the reflecting pool, will be refurbished courtesy of an $18.5 million donation, the D.C. philanthropist who donated the funds confirmed Monday.
