“Where are my gays? Lesbians? Any bisexuals? You’re greedy and I love it!”
Sasha Adams and Ba’naka, local drag queens of Nellie’s Sports Bar fame, whipped out joke after borderline (and sometimes outright) inappropriate joke at the drag bingo night Monday to gales of laughter at the Marvin Center.
The event was a special kick off to Allied in Greek Week and all proceeds from the fundraiser went directly to Casa Ruby, the city’s only bilingual, multicultural LGBT advocacy group and shelter.
“It’s great to have a fun event where so many diverse student organizations can support Casa Ruby,” said McKenzie Connors, a sophomore. “It’s a cause that’s really important and special for our school.”
Connors was one of the handful of people that braved the icy streets to drag bingo, hosted by Allied in Pride, the Panhellenic Association, the Interfraternity Council, the Multicultural Greek Council and Nellie’s.
Allied in Greek was started in 2012 as a collaboration between Greek chapters and Allied in Pride. Allied in Greek dropped its annual drag competition – where fraternity members donned makeup and dresses styled by partner sororities – for the first time last year after some students said it was insensitive. The group instead focused on a week of educational and philanthropic events.
A buffet of mozzarella sticks, chicken tenders, cake, brownies, bell peppers, cucumbers and assorted beverages were provided free of charge, although a $5 donation was suggested.
Students munched on snacks while number after number was called and gifts like throws, a Justin Bieber limited edition perfume set, dishes and Nellie’s t-shirts were given out to winners.
Interspersed between sets (and once to break a tie between two winners) spontaneous song and dance numbers broke out, much to the delight and embarrassment of the audience. One brave soul twerked to Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda” at a dance-off during a rousing round of “Shit Out of Luck” – a fast-paced version of bingo.
Near the end, first Ba’naka then Sasha Adams treated the crowd to a routine of their own. Ba’naka pranced around the room to “Frozen”, while Sasha Adams let students slip dollar bills into her dress.
