“The Revenant,” based on alumnus’ book, receives 12 Oscar nominations

This post was written by Hatchet reporter John Glasfield.

The film “The Revenant,” adapted from alumnus Michael Punke’s book “The Revenant: A Novel of Revenge,” was been nominated for 12 Oscars THursday, making the survival tale the film with the most nominations this year.

Punke has plenty to boast about with this achievement but unfortunately, he literally can’t. According to the Washington Post, Punke — who’s currently serving as the deputy U.S. trade representative and ambassador to the World Trade Organization in Switzerland — can’t say anything to the public about his book or the movie without breaking the law. Federal guidelines prohibit Punke from doing any promotional work that may be seen as an abuse of his high-ranking position.

However, despite not being able to campaign for the movie alongside Leo DiCaprio, Punke will most likely get the satisfaction of watching Leonardo DiCaprio take home an Oscar this February for playing his protagonist, the fur trapper Hugh Glass.
