Women’s basketball senior forward Jonquel Jones earned her second straight Atlantic 10 Player of the Week Award after posting 18.3 points and 17.8 rebounds in a four-game span last week, the league announced Monday.
The award is Jones’ tenth, breaking the record formerly held by GW Athletic Hall-of-Famer Cathy Joens, who played from 1999-2004.
Jones led the Colonials to a 3-1 record last week, posting a double-double in every contest. She made history against No. 25 Iowa in the Lone Star Showcase, scoring 23 points and amassing a school-record 26 rebounds, breaking a 39-year-old mark.
Additionally, the Colonials’ rebounding total tied for the second-highest single-game total in conference history. Jones provided the clutch moment in that game as well, as she made a layup with just 21 seconds left in the game to send the contest to a second overtime.
Jones took over in the final period, scoring back-to-back baskets as the Colonials grabbed a crucial advantage over the Hawkeyes.
Jones reached the 800-rebound mark for her career the following day in a loss to Wright State. For the tournament, Jones averaged a line of 20.0 points, 19.3 rebounds, and 2.7 blocks. Jones also added 13 points, 13 boards, and four blocks in a win over Fresno State at the beginning of the week.
For the season, the preseason Wooden Award candidate is averaging 15.0 rebounds per game, good for third best in the country, to go along with 17.1 points per game. Jones has tallied five consecutive double-doubles, which is best in the A-10 and also tied for the third-longest streak nationally.
The Colonials have now been awarded three straight Player of the Week awards, with junior Caira Washington being awarded in the first week. Jones will look to build on her impressive play as the Colonials return home to the Smith Center to face Florida Gulf Coast at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 3.
