Rhode Island Avenue’s tiny house community hosted tours yesterday.
The Matchbox house was on display, which is described as D.C.’s smallest and most self-sustaining home on the event’s Facebook page.
“I wanted something that would be fully off-grid and self-sustaining that I could move around. … Just something that would be simple,” said Jay Austin, who built and owns the Matchbox house.
Tiny houses require less material to construct the home and require less energy to heat and cool it, making tiny houses conducive to environmentally-friendly living, according to the owners.
Some cities are even looking at tiny houses as a type of affordable housing, said Lee Perra, a tiny house owner.
