For those looking for cheap apartments, cross D.C. off the list.

The D.C. area had the fifth highest rental market in the country in May, according to The Washington Post. The Post found that it costs a median of $2,100 to rent a one-bedroom apartment in the city.

The most expensive apartments were in Georgetown, where one-bedrooms cost about $2,600 a month. Cheaper places could be found in Anacostia at $995 a month, or in the Mount Ranier neighborhood for $980.

San Francisco, New York, Boston and San Jose had higher rental costs, according to The Post. Renting a one-bedroom apartment in San Francisco costs a median rent of $3,500, and a two-bedroom apartment in D.C. would cost a median of more than $2,900, according to Zumper, a real estate website.

Data released by the Urban Institute last year found that millennials moving into the city are increasing the demand for more residential buildings in D.C., but rising housing prices in Foggy Bottom could boost how much students pay to live in an off-campus apartment in the area.
