American Studies Association calls on Washington Redskins for name change

The American Studies Association is condemning the name of D.C.’s national football team.

ASA, a national organization that counts GW’s American studies department among its members, wants the Washington Redskins to change their logo and name, according to a release. The group said it unanimously voted on the subject May 2.

“The ASA, as a leading site of scholarship on indigeniety, on racism, on settler colonialism, and on sport, and as an organization based in Washington, D.C. deplores the continuation the harmful nickname and images associated with the team,” the release said.

Last September, John Banzhaf, a GW Law professor, lobbied the Federal Communications Commission to make the word “redskin” a racial slur so it couldn’t be used on air.

In 2013, GW released a statement supporting its faculty’s academic freedom to express their own opinions after ASA approved an academic boycott of Israel.
