Despite a rough start from freshman Robbie Metz in the rubber match against Rhode Island Sunday, the rookie earned his fourth Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors of the season, his first since March 9, the league announced Monday.
Metz hit well this week over a five game stretch, including a losing series to Rhode Island. He batted .500 (10-20) with seven runs, three RBI, one double and four stolen bases. GW went 3-2 on the week, including two midweek wins against Towson and Coppin State.
In Wednesday’s game against Coppin State, Metz went 2-3 with three runs, three RBI and two stolen bases in a lopsided 11-2 win.
In A-10 play at Rhode Island, he went 6-13 and scored three runs.
Metz struck out in a critical moment in the first game against the Rams, down two runs with two outs in the ninth. The first two Colonials reached base, but Rhode Island retired the side, getting Metz on strikes for the final out.
Metz pitched well into the fifth inning on Sunday until a three run home run eventually chased him from the ballgame. He did have a good day at the plate, going 3-4 with one run and two steals.
Metz is currently batting .304, fourth-best on the team, and has scored 24 runs, second-best on the team. He also leads all starters on the team with a 2.78 ERA in 55 innings pitched over 10 starts. His ERA is good for fifth-best in the conference among starters.
Metz was also awarded the Georgey for Rookie of the Year at the awards ceremony for GW athletes on Thursday.
