Women’s water polo defeated Notre Dame (OH) College 15-5 in Princeton, N.J. Sunday, finishing the weekend with a 1-2 record.
Junior Hannah Cox led the Colonials (12-12, 1-6) with four goals in the game, helping them rebound from 18-8 and 19-5 losses to No. 15 Michigan and No. 16 Indiana, respectively.
Freshman Scarlett Hallahan added one goal against Notre Dame after scoring three against Indiana this morning and three against Michigan. Freshman Jacqueline Bywater scored three goals and recorded three steals against Michigan.
“Our team showed some good resiliency,” said head coach Adam Foley. “Our ability to bounce back showed our ability to focus on the moment and shake off a bad loss.”
Foley said the goal for the weekend was to improve from beginning to end, especially since the Colonials were facing nationally ranked teams. He said playing nationally recognized opponents will give his young team, which has six freshman and only three seniors (two of which are goalies), a chance to set a goal.
“The experience of playing a nationally ranked team is invaluable,” Foley said. “It lets us focus in on where we want to be eventually, getting better, and the level that we’re striving to preform at.”
With only two games remaining before championship play, Foley said the end of the season features important matches.
The team next faces a pair of strong opponents in Brown and Harvard in Providence, R.I. The doubleheader next Saturday will give GW a chance to compete in what is likely to be a difficult game and will give the Colonials a chance to take a better seed into the postseason.
“The end of the year offers a chance at continued experience of trying to get better and prepare ourselves for the conference tournament and getting ready for championship play,” Foley said.
