The volleyball team earned a pair of Atlantic 10 weekly awards to complement its 3-0 start, the league announced Tuesday.
Senior outside hitter Kelsey Newman won A-10 Co-Player of the Week honors, and sophomore middle blocker Chidima Osuchukwu was named the Defensive Player of the Week.
Newman has helped propel GW’s strong start with two double-doubles, hitting .317 through three games. The award is Newman’s third A-10 weekly honor and her second Player of the Week, her first coming in November of last season. Newman also received Rookie of the Week honors during her freshman campaign. She shares this week’s award with Rhode Island outside hitter Franki Darnold.
Newman leads the team with 39 kills and ranks second on the team with 39 digs. She has played every set for the Colonials. In GW’s win Saturday over North Dakota, she led the team with 17 kills while adding 17 digs.
Osuchukwu has totaled 14.0 total blocks and 36 kills so far this season, which earned her the GW Invitational’s Most Valuable Player award. She also boasts a team-high .342 attack percentage. Osuchukwu won Rookie of the Week honors twice during her freshman year.
The Colonials have yet to lose a set this season, blanking Arkansas State 3-0 (25-22, 27-25, 25-23) and Auburn 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-20) on Friday before dealing the same result to North Dakota (25-20, 25-17, 25-20).
The team will play an exhibition match Wednesday against the Metropolitan University of Puerto Rico at 7 p.m. before a regular season match Friday at 5 p.m. against Southeastern Louisiana in the James Madison Invitational.
