Teen arrested for attacking UPD officers

A 19-year-old man was arrested Wednesday after he pushed a University Police Department officer into a chain-link fence and elbowed him in the face.

The man, who was not affiliated with GW, fled into Fulbright Hall after three officers stopped to question him and a friend at about 1 a.m. They both appeared intoxicated, University spokeswoman Maralee Csellar said.

After the officers chased him into Fulbright, the man attacked one of them as they attempted to force him to the ground, according to police documents. Two officers and the man were bruised during the assault, Csellar said.

The man had run past the security guard at the residence hall’s entrance, while his friend sat down on the sidewalk.

Both men were taken to GW Hospital to be treated for intoxication. The man who assaulted the officer was then taken to the Metropolitan Police Department, where city police discovered he had a fake ID.

The incident marks the third reported assault of an officer this month. During two separate incidents, intoxicated students attacked officers after they both refused to pay cab fares.

At least 16 campus police officers have been assaulted on or near campus over the last two years.
