After leading the women’s softball team to six-straight wins in one of its strongest weeks of the season, junior Victoria Valos and freshman Megan Linn received Atlantic 10 Player and Rookie of the Week awards, respectively, the league announced Monday.
After dropping the week’s first game on March 11., GW won six consecutive games, defeating its opponents by at least two runs in each of the wins.
Through the team’s seven games, Valos led the offense with a team high .520 batting average, including two home runs, eight RBIs and two stolen bases. On Friday, in wins against Saint Francis and Manhattan, Valos went 5-for-8 with three RBIs. n GW’s victory over Brown Sunday, Valos broke the program’s all-time RBI record with her 104th run batted in.
Valos managed at least one hit in all seven games played this week and raised her batting average by nearly 100 points to an impressive .338. This is the second career Player of the Week award for the junior, becoming just the third Colonial in team history to receive it multiple times.
The Colonials were down 8-7 to Saint Francis in extra innings Friday, but a walk-off three-run homer from Linn in the bottom of the ninth propelled GW to a 10-8 win in the day’s first game.
Linn batted .440 for the week, tallying a home run, a team-high nine RBIs and five stolen bases. This marks the second-straight week a GW freshman has received the A-10 Rookie of the Week award, as Mary Wiley earned the honor last week.
The Corona, CA native had the best day of any Colonial during Saturday’s double-header. The freshman went 5-for-8 with two doubles and three RBIs. Linn leads the team with a .365 batting average on the season, as well as a team-high 31 hits and 20 RBIs.
The Colonials, now 10-15-1 and 9-1-1 in their last 11 games, continue their season at the Capital Invitational Thursday with two games against Colgate at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
