Water shut off in Munson Hall after third water main break this month

Munson Hall will be without water for the rest of Tuesday as crews work to fix a broken pipe near 22nd and I Streets.

The District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority will continue repairs until about 9 p.m., GW’s property manager Paris Rossiter said in an email to residents obtained by The Hatchet.

Crews also repaired two other water main breaks in a similar location this month, which both shut off water to the dorm.

Pamela Mooring, spokeswoman for D.C. Water, said that this winter’s cold weather and “swings in temperature” was likely the cause of the break. D.C. Water has responded to about 30 water main breaks over the past six weeks, she said.

D.C. water has upped its replacement cycle for aging water pipes across the District, and will replace 13 miles of the 1300 miles of water mains each year, she said.

She added that it was not uncommon for water main breaks to happen in the same area, though she was not sure if the three breaks were related.

“It’s not uncommon for there to be a break on one portion and then once that is fixed have a break down the line later,” Mooring said. “Sometimes when they make a repair maybe it doesn’t actually hold for a day or two later or could break again.”
