Before students headed home for winter break, campus police officers recorded the semester’s highest number of alcohol violations in one night.
Officers recorded 28 liquor law violations on Dec. 19, higher than the total number of violations over any weekend this semester, according to the University crime log. Campus police on average record about three liquor law violations on a weekend night.
Half of the violations took place in the sophomore residence hall Fulbright Hall, and 10 were in The Dakota. All of the cases, which also included violations in Thurston Hall and Somers Hall, were closed and sent to GW’s disciplinary office.
The University Police Department recorded about 14 alcohol violations on average each weekend this fall, including Thursdays. The second-highest number of violations on one weekend night occurred over Labor Day weekend, with 12 handed out on Saturday, Aug. 31.
UPD Chief Kevin Hay declined to comment on the spike.
Two of the weekends with the lowest number of violations were the last weekend of November and the second weekend of December, as students left campus for Thanksgiving break and began to prepare for final exams.
While students had to vacate University housing by Dec. 20, seven violations were listed on Dec. 21, likely the result of alcohol found during room inspections. Associate Dean of Students Tim Miller did not immediately return a request for comment.
