Women’s basketball freshman forward Caira Washington has come to play in recent games, and the Atlantic 10 is taking notice.
On Monday, Washington received the nod from the A-10 as women’s basketball Rookie of the Week for games played between Dec. 9-15. This is the first rookie of the week award that a Colonial has earned during the Tsipis-era, the last being given to now-junior Chakecia Miller in 2011.
In that time, Washington led the team in scoring, posting a career-high 15 points on Monday against Loyola before matching that number once again against Morgan State Saturday. Washington additionally picked up a career-high 13 rebounds against Loyola, on her way to her second double-double of the season.
With opposing defenses focusing on GW’s outside shooters, Washington has excelled at finding high-percentage shots. She has racked up a league-eighth .500 field goal percentage overall, while shooting over 66 percent in both wins last week.
The Colonials second-highest scorer also leads the team in rebounds with 7.9 rpg, and blocks, with ten on the season.
Washington and the Colonials head to the court next against North Carolina A&T on Saturday at 12:00 in the Smith Center.
