Following his game-winning jumper and 25-point performance against Maryland, graduate student guard Maurice Creek was named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week on Monday.
Creek will share the award, given for games played between Dec. 2 and Dec. 8, with UMass guard Chaz Williams. He is the first GW player to earn the Player of the Week honor since Damian Hollis on Dec. 6, 2009.
In GW’s two games during that span – both wins over Rutgers and UMD – Creek averaged 21.5 points on 59 percent shooting, both marks above his season average. Against the Scarlet Knights, he led the team in scoring with 18 points, while adding two assists and two steals.
Before his game-winning dagger at the Verizon Center with 0.6 seconds left, Creek was already on his way to having a stellar night. His 25 points, three three-point field goals and 10 free throws made paced the Colonials on their way to their first BB&T Classic win since 2009.
Creek has proven himself this year as the missing puzzle piece in head coach Mike Lonergan’s lineup. His sharp shooting has brought GW from the bottom of NCAA three-point shooting percentage to the 14th best percentage in the country. His versatility on the outside has also opened things up on the inside for forwards Kevin Larsen and Isaiah Armwood, both of whom are having their best seasons as Colonials.
On the season, Creek leads GW with 16.3 points per game, shooting 46.2 percent from behind the arc – good enough for 4th in the A-10.
With Creek’s help, the Colonials are off to their best start in eight years and will look to continue their hot streak against Boston University Wednesday at the Smith Center at 7 p.m.
