Wrapping up its fall season on Tuesday, the men’s golf team found itself once again at the back of the pack, finishing in last place for the second time in five events this fall.
Competing at the Wendy’s Kiawah Classic at Turtle Point Golf Course, the Colonials tallied a three-round score of 939 (321-310-308), 28 shots behind fellow Atlantic 10 foe Richmond and 75 shots behind the tournament’s winner, No. 33 South Carolina.
Freshman Lucas Farmer led GW for the first time since his T-20 finish in his inaugural collegiate tournament, carding a 13-over-par score of 229 (76,76,77) and finishing T-48. Behind him was junior Jack Persons, who rallied from a first-round 84 with back-to-back rounds of 73 and 74 for a final tally of 15-over-par (T-59).
GW saw some glimpses of improvement two weeks ago when it carded its lowest scores since the 2012 A-10 Tournament, but they’ve struggled to keep the momentum going. Most noticeably, the Colonials have been unable to get a solid weekend from all five competitors, a task vital for a team sport like college golf. Despite multiple individual Top-20 finishes, GW failed to finish in the top half of any of its fall tournaments.
To have any chance of being competitive come this spring, the Colonials will have to find a way to break the 300 mark more consistently – something they’ve only done twice this season. Of the other 17 teams competing at the Kiawah Classic, 16 had at least one round under 300, while the top four teams had all their rounds under that mark.
The first step to jumping that hurdle may be making more birdies, like Persons did this weekend, carding a team-high 11 birdies over the 54-hole tournament.
GW will have three months to regroup and practice before it’s first event of the spring season – the Arizona Intercollegiate – on Jan. 27-28.
