After 110 minutes of play, GW shut out the nation’s top scoring offense in Dayton, but failed to score a goal of their own.
The Colonials (3-6-1), coming off a deflating 2-1 loss last week, tied with the No. 19 Dayton Flyers (10-0-1) 0-0 Friday night in double overtime – the first time all season the Flyers didn’t walk away with a win. It also delivered GW with a well-needed tie to give them a point towards A-10 action.
Dayton was the only remaining Division I team without a loss or tie going into this game.
GW did all of this with a new goalkeeper in the net, as junior Luke Farrell started just four games last year. He earned his second career shutout with five saves, including a save with five minutes to play in regulation before the first of two overtimes.
The top-ranked Flyers’ offense, entering the the game averaging 2.8 goals per game, did in fact outshoot the Colonials 21-10 and 19-6 in regulation, but GW put the pressure on in the two overtimes – outshooting 4-2.
The closest of the four shots came as time expired in the first overtime, when senior Abdul Shaban sailed a shot just high of the goal. Meanwhile with 1:17 to play in the second overtime, sophomore Philip McQuitty had his shot blocked to prevent another solid opportunity by the Colonials.
GW had three shots on goal including two within a minute of each other, when sophomore Ross Higgins took a shot in the 48th minute, and then Sam Summerlin made a play in the 50th minute. Senior Tyler Ranalli had the Colonials’ final strike on goal in the 82nd minute.
GW will look to take on another top team Sunday, the St. Louis Billikens, who won the conference last year. Next Sunday, GW will play their first home A-10 game against Fordham.
