Georgetown boutiques stayed open late Friday night amidst heavy rain, offering free food and special discounts for day one of Fashion Art Design Georgetown.
DJs pumped music throughout stores such as Intermix and TARI, where shoppers could snack on free sweets and, for the 21-and-over crowd, champagne.
Other activities included getting personalized illustrations at Juicy Couture, where you could also meet Miss D.C. and chat about the night.
“I think the big thing of Fashion Art Design is actually showing the elements of art in fashion,” said Miss D.C. Antoinette Cordova. “It’s a great event to scope out what fashion is in D.C.”
Beyond the store events, FAD offered multiple other fun activities to engage shoppers as they walked through M Street. Event staff prowled the streets, snapping pictures of savvy shoppers and projecting them onto the sidewall of PNC Bank. Additionally, with three photo booths sprinkled in the area, there was always a chance for a quick picture and funny pose.
But, the turnout at FAD tended, for the large part, to be more of a ghost town than a packed social event. Bad traffic plagued M Street throughout the night and rain continued to pour. Because most of the events required walking from each store to another, many potential shoppers appeared to have stayed in.
While the event promised fun shopping and special opportunities to discover fashion, Friday night remained awkwardly empty as the turnout remained low and the salespeople far outnumbered shoppers.
