If you’re mourning the temporary loss of the Smithsonians, let the (e)merge art fair fill your culture void.
Up-and-coming artists have filled three floors of the swanky Capitol Skyline Hotel with their work.
The garage, pool deck, lobby and several rooms have been transformed into ad hoc art galleries at the Southwest D.C. hotel, located at 10 I St SW.
The (e)merge art fair has supported rising, albeit odd, artists since its inception three years ago. It gives stipends to artists who come from all over the world and work in every medium.
One example is the “15 Minute Conditional bed Stories,” which invites visitors to relax on a mattress, read the U.S. Constitution and contemplate whether the document has become nothing more than a bedtime story.
Guests get to take home a polaroid taken by the creator, Borjana Ventzislavova, as a souvenir.
Another artist, Camden Place, will debut a collection of faux Hillary Clinton campaign swag, with the made-up mantra “Bringing Us Closer.”
“It’s an opportunity to really engage with emerging artists,” Kathryn McKinney, who is in charge of communication about the showings, said. “[(e)merge] focuses on the artists themselves which is not always the case at art fairs. [It’s usually about] the market and the commodity of it. It has a very unique vibe that way.”
The (e)merge art fair will take place through Sunday at 5 p.m. Students can buy a daily pass for $10.
