New fall pilots are piling up and finding time to sift through them can be overwhelming.
Hatchet reporter Eric Robinson does the work for you and takes a look at some of the season’s most promising pilots.
“Super Fun Night”
Airtime: Wednesdays, 9:30 p.m., ABC
Names you’ll know: Rebel Wilson (“Pitch Perfect”)
Overall grade: D+
Premise: Attorney Kimmy Boubier (Rebel Wilson) befriends a British lawyer and decides to party every Friday night in order to attract him.
Best one-liner: “It’s consolation pizza, Kendall. It’s not for winners.”
The worst moment of this surreally unfunny pilot comes in where one of Kimmy Boubier’s friends, Marika (Lauren Ash), accidentally gets drunk and gives a speech in the bathroom surrounded by both Boubier (Wilson) and other friend, Helen-Alice (Liza Lapira). In the middle of her speech, she collapses into unconsciousness, prompting Helen to say, “That drunk little Asian is right.”
This moment essentially captures the awfulness that is “Super Fun Night.” The jokes are not actually jokes, and the writers never seem to get that. Observing that Marika is drunk, Asian, and not exactly the tallest person in the room is presenting facts, not crafting a witty joke.
The premise itself is so bland that the only distinguishing characteristic is the cast of a tragically wasted Wilson. She is good at playing the awkward Kimmy Boubier, but the lack of any funny lines makes her presence completely irrelevant.
Shoddy direction, lazy writing, oddly bloated story lines and an inability to derive humor from almost all of the moments of the pilot put a competent cast to waste.

The Hatchet incorrectly reported that the show aired on Thursday nights. It airs on Wednesdays.
