Not sure what to do with yourself now that your internship on the Hill has been indefinitely suspended?
Restaurants and bars across the District are offering half-priced dinners, extended happy hours and a much-needed morale boost to rally furloughed workers.
Here are a few places – government I.D. or not – worth checking out while members of Congress hit the grind to get the government working again.
— Taylor Gourmet is offering a 10 percent discount any furloughed worker’s purchase of a hoagie or salad, and they will throw in a cookie and some career advising for good measure. With a new location just opened up at 1750 Pennsylvania Avenue, President Obama may not have time to stop in for a cold cut, but you certainly will. (It’s also on GWorld, as of this fall.)
— Celebrate the extended weekend with happy hours and specials to soothe away the shutdown pains. Krammerbooks and Afterwards in Dupont is hosting happy hour prices from open until close for all government employees – except members of Congress. They have to pay double.
–At Madam’s Organ, they promise to not only feel the furloughs’ pain but also deaden it with a free drink and half-off meals.
—Kangaroo Boxing Club will give out free screwdrivers, “for all the federal employees getting screwed.” It pledges to come up with new deals daily, so keep an eye on its Twitter page.
— Celebrity chef Jose Andres tweeted that his three restaurants – Jaleo, Zaytinya and Oyamel – would hand out free sandwiches to affected workers until the shutdown ends.
— Finally, for all of you out their now resenting your friends and their shiny government I.D.s, Thomas Foolery has extended their “Angry Hours” so that they now run from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. Order your drink in an angry voice, and get a dollar off. It shouldn’t be too difficult to find something to yell about.
