It may not be quite as wholesome as election night dashes to the White House or Inauguration on the National Mall, but here in D.C. we celebrate all political events like sports games – government shutdowns included.
Here’s how to celebrate the 18th U.S. federal government shutdown in style.
Sixth and I: Shutdown Central
Since the real government won’t be worth watching during the shutdown, Sixth & I Synagoge offers up the next best thing – a constant stream of Aaron Sorkin’s fast talking, classic political drama West Wing. The gold standard in political television, it should be mandatory viewing for any current U.S. Representative or Senator. Season 5, episode 8 “Shutdown” might prove to be especially appropriate.
There will also be board games, free coffee, food and wifi. What more could a furloughed federal worker want?
Federal I.D. Freebies
If you’re interning on the Hill or feel comfortable forging government issued identification, take advantage of the scores of D.C. businesses offering freebies to federal employees. Sprinkles will even give you a free cupcake. This informal meal plan could become a important source of sustenance for federal employees since many won’t be getting paid for the foreseeable future.
Shutdown Booty Calls
D.C.’s Craigslist has a host of new, recently furloughed singles ready to connect. The upside of not having work is that federal employees will now have ample time to devote to their love lives. Really, these lonely federal workers should thank Congress for giving them the perfect opportunity booty call someone off Craigslist.
