A week after lightning strikes canceled the women’s soccer’s game versus William and Mary, Colonials could not get lightning to strike for their offense in a 0-0 double-overtime tie against Mount Saint Mary’s on Friday.
With a season-high 19 shots, the Colonials shot the ball well and relied on their signature defense when none of those shots found the back of the net.
They outshot the Mount 19-8, including an 11-3 differential in the second half and 6-1 in the first overtime.
In total, seven different players contributed to the 19 shots, seven of which were on goal.
Three of those shots on goal seemed poised to break the scoreless drought, but none of them broke the goal line. In the 15th minute, Abbate struck a shot from the right side of the box, but the ball broke just left of the post. Later in the 68th minute Belfonti headed a ball that the Mount’s goalie caught just below the center crossbar. Neal then attempted another shot from inside the box in the 76th minute, just saved by a diving goalkeeper.
The tie brings an end to GW’s (2-2-2) four game road trip, in which they finished to the tune of a 1-0-2 record, with a game still to be made up. It was a solid performance, but certainly not what they were looking for out of a fairly easy road swing with the oppositions combined current record at 7-17-7.
