The women’s soccer team held a 1-0 lead over William and Mary at the 64:25 minute mark, but that was all they would get to play, as lightning forced officials to call the game.
Because the game was called before 70 minutes of play had been completed, the score will not go final, and instead, the two teams will be forced to reschedule a make-up match.
The two teams had a chance to continue play, but according to league rules, a game may not restart more than three hours after its original start time, thus resulting in the “no contest” ruling.
Coming off a 1-0-1 weekend, with continued strong play from standout freshmen, GW was looking to keep the momentum going on the field. Rookie Lina Proska stepped up once again, striking for the third goal of her GW career early in the second-half off an assist from sophomore Kyla Ridley.
“[Proska] is really composed in and around the box,” head coach Sarah Barnes said. “It’s a great quality because you need people who can take chances and are capable of putting them away consistently.”
On the defensive end, senior goalie Nicole Ulrick made big-time saves in the second half that gave the Colonials the opportunity to stay on top of the scoreboard.
“It was a total team effort. William and Mary definitely threatened and we were under pressure for sure,” Barnes said. “Nicole came up with a save in the second half and stopped the other team’s opportunity that could have been a goal.”
There has been no word yet from the league on future plans to reschedule, however, Barnes is optimistic the next few match-ups and the eventual make-up will allow the young team to continue to grow.
“I think overall that the team played really well, although we are disappointed not to have a result, we’re really happy with the play and the progress that Lina made tonight because that was just another step forward for her,” Barnes said.
