Gorbachev cancels talk at GW for health reasons

The School of Media and Public Affairs had planned to sponsor a speech by Mikhail Gorbachev next month. Photo used under Creative Commons license.

Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev will no longer speak on campus next month, the University announced Thursday.

The School of Media and Public Affairs announced four days ago that he would speak at Lisner Auditorium Oct. 1. Gorbachev has cancelled his U.S. tour due to health reasons, according to a University tweet.

He also backed out of attending events like Margaret Thatcher’s funeral earlier this year for health reasons.

GW would have been Gorbachev’s only D.C. stop on the scheduled U.S. tour.
