The University will build a new memorial dedicated to veterans next to the revamped Gelman Library entrance.
Veterans Memorial Park, which is now the lawn intersected by a walkway next to GW Deli, will sit between Gelman Library and Kogan Plaza starting this fall after trustee Mark Shenkman donated to the project. A dedication ceremony will formally open the park after construction wraps up later this month.
“This new location will elevate the stature of Veterans Park and increase its visibility,” Shenkman, an alumnus and U.S. Army veteran, said in a release Monday.
The new memorial site will feature an illuminated flagpole and a wall displaying the insignias of all five U.S. military branches. GW has put a bright spotlight on veterans issues in recent years, starting up programs and putting more money and staff into veterans initiatives.
University spokeswoman Michelle Sherrard declined to say how much the donation was worth.
The current site of the Veterans Memorial Park will remain an open green space. That location was slated for new construction in the University’s two-decade campus plan of 2007, though no projects are in the works for the site, Sherrard said.
