The baby delivered at L’Enfant Plaza Metro Station this morning received a clean bill of health from the GW Hospital shortly after he was born.
His 23-year-old mother Shavonnte Taylor, who gave birth on the station platform around 10:30 a.m., was headed toward Greenbelt, Md. after a doctor’s appointment near Foggy Bottom when she began to have contractions, the Washington Post reported.
She was helped by an off-duty medical technician before additional medical staff arrived on the scene.
She named the baby boy Amir Mason, ignoring calls from thousands of Twitter users to call him after the Metro station where he was born, or more creative options like “Metro Track Work.” He weighed 8 pounds and 5 ounces.
Saa Alpha, a Metro station managers on duty at L’Enfant Plaza Thursday morning, told the Post that the birth only lasted a few minutes.
“It just popped out,” Alpha said. “It was just awesome.”
