Hatchet reporters woke up at 3 a.m. on the East Coast to binge-watch Season 4 of Arrested Development, released May 26, and chronicle one of the 15 new episodes every day.
Episode 4: “The B. Team”
O.J. Simpson-style court scenes: 1
Richter Quintuplets in episode: 2
“The Office” cast cameos: 1
Best one-liner: “A Bob Loblaw law bomb.” -Bob Loblaw
Centered around: Michael Bluth
Realizing we’re back with another Michael (Jason Bateman) episode is pretty anti-climatic, since he’s second on the lame scale after Lindsay (Portia de Rossi). That’s probably because the other “Arrested” characters are strongest in their awkward moments, while his are more in the cringe-worthy style of “The Office” star Michael Scott – uncomfortable and frustrating.
Michael’s character has developed far from his Season 1 voice of reason to more of a socially awkward sleazeball. He’s called into movie producer Ron Howard’s office (also narrator of the show) and asked to take over Maeby’s (Alia Shawkat) job of producing a movie based off his family. Michael mistaking his new crush Rebel Alley (Isla Fisher) as Howard’s lover – actually his daughter – is like watching the Rita story from last season, but with the added pain of knowing he’s wrong the whole time.
The high points of the episode come from the “Being John Malkovich” homage (Michael’s office floor has an incredibly short ceiling) and the “dream team” Michael throws together to produce the Bluth movie: Warden Gentles, Andy Richter and Carl Weathers. Here, the discomfort is diffused with plays off the B-list celebrity status of the crew. Not as bad as Lindsay’s episode, but barely saved by these last bits.
