The city issued a permit Wednesday for Chipotle Mexican-Grill to begin interior construction on its new location at The Shops at 2000 Penn.
The popular chain will include 33 seats with a total occupancy of 56, The Washington Business Journal reported. It will be the 13th location in the District.
Chris Arnold, communications director for Chipotle, said the eatery will likely open by the end of September.
“It’s still too far away to put a more specific date to it,” Arnold wrote in an email Thursday.
The restaurant signed a lease in December with the Shops at 2000 Penn, filling space formerly filled by the UPS store and another Mexican eatery, The Burro.
A University spokeswoman said then that the eatery could open as early as this spring.
Currently, the closest Chipotle is located at 19th and M streets and accepts GWorld.
