Gelman Library will shut down for a second time today after a broken cooling system has left some rooms as hot as 87 degrees, according to the library’s Twitter.
The building will close at 4 p.m. and expects “to be able to open sometime tomorrow as temperatures in the building moderate,” according to a post on the library’s website.
GW Facilities installed a temporary chiller today after a pipe in the permanent cooling system broke down yesterday – causing temperatures to skyrocket in the building.
Library staff placed fans throughout the building and monitored temperatures throughout the day, University spokeswoman Michelle Sherrard said. Staff who could work away from the library were encouraged to go home.
“It may take some period for the cool air to circulate through the building and lower temperatures from the current level,” Sherrard said, “but we hope to re-open Gelman Library sometime tomorrow as temperatures in the building moderate.”
The building reopened at 8 a.m. this morning after closing at midnight due to excessive heat.
The building’s decade-old chiller is slated for replacement later this spring.
Facilities services began repairs to the building’s air conditioners Monday night, and “floors are beginning to cool down,” according to the library’s Twitter account.
A heat wave arrived in the District yesterday, and temperatures rose to 90 degrees today.
