Months after negotiations between GW and the Corcoran College of Art and Design fell through, the art school is now mulling a partnership with the University of Maryland.
Students and faculty of the District’s only professional college of art and design will meet with a top University of Maryland administrator next week, and the school’s Board of Trustees will make a decision about the partnership proposal Wednesday, the Washington City Paper reported.
GW was in talks with Corcoran in October to steward its college while the National Gallery of Art considered a partnership with its gallery.
Corcoran has also been in talks with Harvard, Georgetown, New York and George Mason universities and the University of Texas.
Without a partnership, the college could face financial ruin.
Wayne Reynolds, a philanthropist who threw a $10,000 party in February for the Corcoran Center of Creativity, told the Washington City Paper that the institution had auctioned off fine rugs so it could forecast operations beyond March.
